A Toronto neurosurgeon has pleaded guilty in the death of his wife from Tecumseh.
Mohammed Shamji appeared in a Toronto court Monday morning and pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of Dr. Elana Fric-Shamji,a family doctor at Scarborough and Rouge Hospital.
He was originally charged with first-degree murder and committing an indignity to human remains in the death of his wife.
The body of the mother of three, was found in a suitcase by the side of the road, north of Toronto in December 2016.
She had been beaten, strangled and died of blunt force trauma.
Mohammed Shamji was arrested the next day.
Outside the courthouse, Elana's mother Ana Fric says that while the family supports the plea, it doesn't deliver real justice.
"Justice will never be for us, never, the only justice we will have is if she can come back and she will never come back," she says.
Family lawyer Jean DeMarco says two of the three daughters were in court to hear their father admit he killed their mother.
"The eldest was fairly adament that she be there," she says. "She is the one who gave a full day of testimony during the preliminary inquiry and she feels a part of the process."
With the guilty plea, Mohammed Shamji faces life in prison with no chance of parole between 10 and 25 years. The judge will decide parole eligibility.
The case returns to court May 8.
