A local peewee hockey team needs your vote.
The Tecumseh Red Blueberries are a finalist for the Chevrolet Good Deeds Cup, program that seeks to inspire young Canadians to be better people by promoting the positive values learned through hockey, and acting on them by performing good deeds in their community.
Red Blueberries head coach, John Dobrowolsky says a top 10 finish has landed the team $2,000 for its charity of choice, the Hospice of Windsor and Essex County, but a first overall finish would mean another $100,000 toward the cause.
Dobrowolsky says the team was selected for its volunteer efforts at Hospice, showcased in a video where players helped serve Christmas dinner at the Leamington campus.
He says the team also takes part in the Hockey for Hospice tournament every year as well.
"We thought it would be a good experience for the kids to give back to Hospice and volunteer with the organization to learn more about what they do, because they really didn't have an idea of what Hospice was truly about," says Dobrowolsky.
He says it has been a great experience for the players.
"This for them is just an experience of a lifetime. They got to know people within the Hospice organization in a deep way. They got to understand what Hospice is about. They understand much more about the significance of giving back to the community," says Dobrowolsky.
The Tecumseh Red Blueberries were selected from over 200 teams across Canada and are the only finalists from Southwestern Ontario.
The next step is to try to win the contest but Dobrowolsky says the team needs residents to go online, watch their video and 'like' it as often as they can.
"We need the support of the community because this is something that we can't do ourselves," he says. "We really need our Windsor, Tecumseh and Essex County community to vote and if we have the Windsor community do that, each individual in our community do that, there's a good chance that we will become a finalist."
