Rose City Ford in east Windsor is bringing home the message about drinking and driving.
As part of its Driving Skills for Life Program, it has two impaired suits — one for impaired by alcohol and the other impaired by drug.
Weights are built into the suits to simulate impairment affecting balance, slowing down movements and goggles that affect vision.
General Manager Scott Ohler says heading into the long holiday weekend, it's important to raise awareness about the dangers of impaired driving, by both alcohol and drug.
"I think that is why it is nice to have the ability to experience impairment while you are sober, because you really are able to understand just how much it does affect you, so that's the beauty of the suit."
He says walking a straight line while wearing the suit is a challenge.
"That's why it is so important that people really understand the effect that it does have on them because when you are in that situation, you really don't understand," he says. Adding, "It was important to have a suit for drug impairment, which doesn't get a lot of attention.
"In North America, 18% of traffic accidents involve impairment, non-alcohol impairment, so some sort of a drug, marijuana, cocaine that sort of thing."
The suits were designed by a German firm.
