A grocery store in St.Clair Beach is trying to help families with autistic children.
The Sobey's on Amy Croft Dr., just off Manning Rd., is introducing a sensory hour every Wednesday from 7pm until 8pm.
It's one of three stores in the province taking part in a pilot project as part of a partnership with Autism Ontario.
Maryann Morency is with Sobeys and tells CTV Windsor that she hopes the hour is a peaceful shopping experience for families with autistic children.
As part of sensory hour, Morency says the lights will be dimmed, carts will not be collected, the cash registers will not beep and the public address system will not be used.
"These families can come out with their kids to do some shopping at a time when maybe they wouldn't be able to otherwise," she says. "We're hoping it's going to be a great experience for them."
Reduced lighting, noise and other stimuli are meant to make the experience more tolerable for people with autism.
Sobeys first introduced the sensory hour in its stores in Atlantic Canada last fall.
