Sharks score four powerplay goals following controversial call in the third period

Barclay Goodrow scored 18:19 into overtime to send the San Jose Sharks into the second round of the NHL playoffs with a 5-4 win over the Vegas Golden Knights.

The Sharks erased a three-goal deficit by scoring four times on a disputed major penalty in the third period.

What looked like was going to be a relatively easy Vegas win turned crazy with 10:47 to play in regulation after a bloody scene on the ice led to a major penalty on Cody Eakin and sent San Jose captain Joe Pavelski to the locker room dazed.

The officials huddled as a dazed Pavelski was helped to the locker room and gave Eakin a five-minute major for cross-checking and a game misconduct.

San Jose will meet the Colorado Avalanche in Round 2 of the NHL playoffs.

In other action, the Boston Bruins defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-1 to win that series in seven games.
