The Welcome Centre Shelter for women and families on Bridge Ave., the Salvation Army for men on Church St. and the Downtown Mission on Victoria are emergency shelters operated by community agencies.
The best way to avoid hypothermia or frostbite is to wear several layers of loose-fitting, light-weight warm clothing along with hats and mittens.
Drivers are also reminded when temperatures dip below -13°C, salt is less effective on roadways.
According to Environment Canada, frigid air coming out of the Arctic will cause temperatures to drop to -13°C Tuesday afternoon with an afternoon wind chill of -25°C.
The forecast then calls for the mercury to plummet to -21°C Tuesday night with an overnight wind chill of -34°C, with those temperatures expected to continue during the day Wednesday.
