A fundraiser is underway to remember a Windsor senior who was attacked and later died while she was picking up garbage.
Sara Anne Widholm, 75, died in December 2018, 14 months after she was beaten on the Ganatchio Trail.
Renee Rupert has started a gofundme page to raise $3,500 to create a commemorative area.
"It was just so upsetting, it was despicable, not only her age, it would have happened to anybody that was walking that trail," she says. "I just want the community to know that when speaking to the family, they have no ill-will towards the city."
Widholm suffered multiple brain hemorrhages, extensive skull fractures, and injuries to her face and neck.
The space on the trail would include a bench, a tree, a perennial garden and plaque to also remember Sara Anne's husband Alfred who died four months after the attack.
It would also include a garbage can because Widholm walked the trail to keep it clean.
Rupert says she didn't know the Widholms but felt compelled to do something.
"They were both missionaries from what I know from the family. They worked their life as missionaries and they have always worked for the people and I just wanted to let the family know that the people here in Windsor are giving back to them.
The total cost of the project is $7,000. Half the project has already been paid for.
The suspect in the case, Habibullah Ahmadi, is charged with second-degree murder.
The case is still before the courts.
