The federal government has used the University of Windsor as the location to announce Discovery research grants across the country.
With a boost of $70-million over previous year's funding, Ottawa is spending $558-million to fund 4,300 projects.
The money is distributed through the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
According to the Minister of Science and Sport Kirsty Duncan, it is the largest investment in research in Canada's history.
The former faculty member of UWindsor, teaching geography from 1993 to 2000, says pure research is what's needed to develop better products.
"We all want a better environment whether that is water, air, we want better health treatments, we want new technologies," she says. "Discovery research leads to new innovations which leads to new products and services and economic growth. Today is a good day for research in Canada."
In Windsor, 30 projects are receiving $6-million in funding.

"To have 30 researchers being honoured, that is a tremendous accomplishment, the university will be very proud, Windsor should be very proud," she adds.
Many of the 30 projects funded at the University of Windsor had displays set up in Assumption Hall for the minister to review.
