Windsor area students appear to be online as the province is set to announce a ban on cellphone use in classrooms.
Saying smartphones have become a huge distraction in classrooms, the province will make a formal announcement in the near future.
During consultations on education last fall, 97% of respondents support some form of ban on cellphones.
AM800 News approached some students at Devonshire Mall to see what they think and many understand the purpose of the ban admitting they are a distraction in the classrom, while others think their cellphones are great educational tools.
The Progressive Conservatives had proposed such a ban in their platform during the 2018 provincial election campaign.
Government sources who were not authorized to speak publicly ahead of the announcement say exceptions would be made for when teachers want to use cellphones as part of their lesson, for medical reasons and students with special needs.
The Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board and Greater Essex County District School Board have policies in place for 'personal electronic devices' and both indicate the devices are allowed in the classroom at the discretion of the teacher.
