Local denists are giving back to the community.
The Essex County Dental Society hosted its fourth "Restoration Smile" project on Friday morning.
Organizer Dr. Matthew Duronio says 17 dentists from Windsor-Essex donated their time to help patients in need and provided basic restorative and surgical services.
He says the denists assisted about 40 patients.
"Unfortunately we usually get such a good response from patients and there's usually a good list of them that we can't treat everybody but the local dental community steps up."
Dr. Duronio says it's unfortuante that some patients needed more than a basic check up.
"A lot of patients that are in pain or in need have teeth that are too far gone and have to be pulled out," he says. "So the nice thing is, is that we have a lot of denists here that are volunteering today that are comfortable doing surgery so we can provide that."
Dr. Duronio says the dentists reviewed the patients records and were prioritized by their needs.
The event was hosted at St. Clair College's Anthony P. Toldo Centre for Applied Health Sciences in south Windsor.
Students from the college's dental programs assisted with the procedures and check-ups.
