The union representing some of the workers at Facca Construction are trying to regroup after their Windsor worksite was disrupted.
The LiUNA members were set to erect girders for an extension to the Herb Gray Parkway at Ojibway Parkway overnight on Monday when several members of the Ironworkers Local 700 union showed up and interrupted the work.
LiUNA Local 625 Business Manager Rob Petroni says police were called in as rocks were thrown and construction equipment was damaged.
Petroni spent the day with police and the company assessing the situation to make sure the work gets done and workers are safe.
Ironworkers Local 700 claims Facca is outsourcing the work to unqualified workers.
"Just because you are not in the proper union or the union that you think you should be in, doesn't make you an unskilled worker. These people have been doing this work for 30 years," says Petroni. "To suggest that a company like Facca or any other company building projects like this, that are unskilled, this job quite honestly is the equivalent of putting a swing together compared to the jobs that Facca has done."
Petroni says the job was awarded to Facca six months ago and he's puzzled why the Ironworkers union would raise the issue now.
More work is slated to take place in January on that section of the parkway.
