The University of Windsor Lancers Baseball Club have qualified for the Great Lakes Regional Tournament in Crestwood, Illinois.
The Lancers — 19-3 overall this season — enter the tournament as the No.2 seed in the Region and will face the No.3 University of Wisconsin Badgers in the first round on Friday.
Lancers head coach Frank Jeney says they prepared for the season by going south for a week.
"For Spring training we went down to Nashville for a week of practicing to get outside, get some actual fly balls, get some team building going," says Jeney. "I got the idea from Kevin Hamlin as he took the men's hockey team down there."
Jeney tells AM800 Sports he has leaned heavily on his captains, Chris Rinaldi-Ross and Jeremy Orton.
"Being a club level sport you really have to put a lot of stock and a lot of trust into the captain roll, and I put a lot of work into the captains as they are forced to do a lot of the day to day operations of the team."
Jeney adds the team got a huge boost with the addition of former Saint, Kyle Gagnon.
"At Christmas time, Kyle Gagnon finished his studies at St Clair College and transferred over to the University and really put the icing on top of the cake for me as he's my leadoff hitter and starting shortstop," says Jeney.
Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. local time Friday.
Nationally, the Lancers are ranked 15th heading into the Regional playoffs out of 138 teams within the NCBA Division I.
The Regionals will be a two game knock-out format and the winner will then travel to North Carolina on May 24-30, 2019 for the NCBA World Series.
