Two teens have pleaded guilty in a vicious assault on a student outside of Herman High School.
One youth pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and the other pleaded guilty to assault following the attack which was captured on cell phone video on September 12, 2018.
Court heard 14-year-old Jayden Trudell and his cousin were walking from Herman to Tecumseh Rd, using an alley, when they were approached by a group of boys.
Jayden was picked up and dropped headfirst on the ground.
He was on the ground unconscious and was seen being kicked and punched. He suffered a fractured skull, brain bleed and hearing loss.
His cousin jumped in to help and was also punched.
A third teen, and the main culprit, is also charged with aggravated assault and is scheduled to appear in court in May.
Justice Micheline Rawlins said, "This was a pack mentality which was evident."
"Schools are safe zones and the courts will do their utmost to make sure that continues," she said.
Jayden's grandfather Kevin Trudell wants to see the offenders to serve time in a youth detention centre.
"There obviously is a problem but how do we end it?" He asks. "Unless the courts start stepping up and realizing there is a serious problem here that these kids don't care anymore, they are going to continue doing what they want to do."
Trudell says this could have easy turned fatal for his grandson.
"Like the doctor at the hospital said, one more punch, one more kick could have killed Jayden," says Trudell.
The video of the assault was played in court which upset the victim's family.
The youths charged can't be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
A sentencing hearing is scheduled for June.
