A four-year-old who was seriously injured after being hit by a Transit Windsor bus is on her way back home to B.C.
Lila Jane has been at Children's Hospital in London since May 27, a day after being hit by a bus on Prince Road near Barrymore Lane in front of Mic Mac Park.
She had been listed in critical condition, but she has been released from hospital and flew home with her family on Monday afternoon.
Her mother, Vanessa Belanger, tells CTV Windsor she is thankful to be able to go home with her daughter.
"I'm just grateful it went this way and our daughter is alive so, because I know a lot of parents don't get the chance to hold their baby again," says Belanger.
Belanger admits the first two weeks were tough with Lila Jane recovering in hospital, but she has responded well to the care of doctors and nurses.
"Once we came up to this floor and her brother came here, she's been awake, talking and she's progressed so much in the last week and a half."
Belanger adds she can't say thank you enough to the residents in Windsor who have reached out with support and prayers for their family.
Belanger is also happy to hear city council approved a $75,000 crossover at the scene of the accident after the community responded with a 3,000 name petition, calling for action.
"We're really grateful for that. I know a tragedy happened but to know that now other families will be safe long term, it's amazing."
Belanger had arrived in Windsor for a wedding on May 25. The collision happened on May 26 and the family has been in hospital ever since.
Upon returning home to B.C., Lila Jane will receive care at a Rehab Centre in Vancouver.
Belanger says once her daughter makes a full recovery she'd like to bring Lila back to Windsor to visit the people who showed their support throughout their ordeal.
