High water levels throughout Windsor-Essex aren't just an issue for property owners — it's put LaSalle in a tough spot when it comes to the annual Strawberry Festival.
Gil Maure Park hosts the carnival and live entertainment every year, but the ground is so saturated it may have to be moved to the Vollmer Complex according to Councillor Sue Desjarlais, who is adamant the move would only be temporary.
She says council is holding a special meeting Thursday, May 23 to make a final decision before the point of no return on Friday.
The event committee member says running power to the event sits on top of laundry list of concerns.
"You see what the city marina has done with their docks this year because they can't run hydro out, and for people walking around that can fall in the mud," she says. "There are all kinds of things that could happen and we're trying to keep it safe."
She says, if Mother Nature co-operates, there's still hope the festival will stay at its long-time home.
"Not be so temperamental and we can keep it where it's at, but if there's an amount of rain that is crazy, like it's been the last couple weeks then we're going to have to look at moving it," she says.
A home for the 32nd annual Strawberry Fest will be decided at 4:30pm Thursday at the LaSalle Civic Centre.
The festival starts on June 6.
