Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent and all of southern Ontario.
The warning extends from Windsor in the south to Owen Sound, Barrie, Toronto and Peterborough.
Severe Weather Meteorologist, Rob Kuhn says Windsor-Essex will be seeing temperatures more typical of Winnipeg on a mid-winter day.
Frigid air coming out of the Arctic will cause temperatures to drop to -13C Tuesday afternoon with an afternoon wind chill of -25C. The forecast then calls for the mercury to plummet to -21C Tuesday night with an overnight wind chill of -34C, with those temperatures expected to continue during the day Wednesday.
"Looking at wind chills overnight tonight between -30C and -35C," says Kuhn.
Kuhn tells AM800 News this frigid air is coming straight out of the Arctic...
"So there's no protection from the lakes, at all, with that. Resulting in the fact that Windsor may be one of the coldest areas in southern Ontario for the next couple of days because there's no protection from any Great Lakes with that wind direction," says Kuhn.
According to Environment Canada, the record low temperature for January 29 in Windsor is -20.6C set in 1963. The record low temperature for January 30 is also -20.6C, set in 1951.
Homeless people in Windsor are reminded that three shelters in the city are open 24/7.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has also signed an order declaring a state of emergency in the state due to the dangerous subzero weather.
Health officials are reminding residents to cover up and dress in layers when outside. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.
Alcohol consumption also makes hypothermia more likely.
Symptoms of frostbite include areas of skin turning red, blue or a grey and white as well as pain, numbness and stiffness, especially in fingers, toes, ears and nose, which are most susceptible.
Overexposure to cold may result in hypothermia, which occurs when the body temperature drops below normal.
Symptoms of hypothermia may include pale skin, lethargy, confusion and hallucinations. In the initial stages, a person may shiver a lot, but as their body temperature drops shivering may also decrease.
In a severe case of hypothermia, a person becomes unconscious, their breathing is shallow, their pulse is irregular and hard to detect. If someone is found with these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately and move them to a warm area.
If it's too cold for you to stay outside, it's too cold for your pet to stay outside.
