Windsor's Mayor says the number of drug related deaths in the city is 'alarming.'
Speaking on AM800's The Morning Drive, Drew Dilkens says one death is bad enough but to get word of four, it's very concerning.
Police officers assisted paramedics on several overdose-related calls from Friday night to early Sunday morning.
Dilkens says the answer may be more than a safe injection site.
"All of the overdoses if in fact they were overdoses, all of them happened inside places," he says. "One was inside a motel on Howard Ave., there were two that happened in the south area of the city, one that happened on the east side of the city, so these are not homeless people who are doing this in an alley — this is a different animal."
"Frankly, we don't even know if this is opioid related or if this is crystal meth," Dilkens adds. "I'm concerned, absolutely let me tell you, I'm concerned. It's a conversation we need to continue to keep having on strategies that we can employ to try and eliminate this or reduce it as much as possible."
The Windsor Essex County Health Unit is asking anyone over the age of 16 to go online and fill out a survey about whether or not there is a need in this area for a safe injection site.
