The Chief of Staff at Windsor Regional Hospital is offering some common sense advice for people as they brave these cold temperatures.
Speaking on AM800's The Afternoon News, Dr. Gary Ing says it's all about dressing warm and dressing in layers.
He adds people who have chronic lung conditions or are on medication should be careful because some medications can affect the body's ability to deal with the cold temperatures.
"On medication, you got to be very careful because certain medication can affect your body temperature in terms of adjusting to the coldness," says Ing.
Dr. Ing also says it's best to limit exposure to the cold and, if you have to be outside, take breaks inside to warm up. However, Dr. Ing recommends avoiding a smoke break.
"Smoking can affect your breathing and can also affect your circulation as well, and if you are on either of the extreme of age groups either elderly or very young, you also have to take precautions," says Ing.
The cold can also affect the lungs.
"If you have asthma, chronic lung condition like emphysema, you got to be very careful because they can cause some airway reaction and you might go into spasm and more short of breath," says Ing.
Dr. Ing stresses any exposed skin should be covered during the cold snap as frostbite can occur within minutes.
The temperature on Wednesday is set to hover around -21 C (-4 F) but, will feel colder with the windchill.
That sets a new record for the City of Windsor.
