Charges have been laid in an animal abuse investigation in Windsor.
Police were called Saturday to an apartment on Lauzon Rd. south of Tecumseh Rd East. where building management told officers there was damage to a wall at the complex.
"When they looked at their surveillance, they came across what appeared to be an animal being abused that was actually tied to this damage, when I say tied, associated to this damage on the wall," says Windsor Police Sergeant Steve Betteridge.
CTV Windsor reports it happened at the Dorchester apartment building.
Sgt. Betteridge adds they were able to locate a suspect immediately.
"We were able to identify a suspect, locate that suspect and arrest that suspect, and that person was brought into custody and is facing a criminal charge," says Betteridge. "The actual charge is willfully causing unnecessary pain, suffering and injury to an animal."
Tyler Vassell, 28, of Windsor is charged.
Sgt. Betteridge tells AM800 News the Windsor Police Service takes animal cruelty allegations seriously.
"This was a blatant abuse that falls directly under the criminal code and that's something our police service will enforce and did enforce in this case," says Betteridge.
The dog was taken for medical treatment and is now in the care of the Windsor-Essex Humane Society.
Sgt. Betteridge says the injuries are not life-threatening.
This happens to be Crime Prevention Week, and Betteridge tells AM800 News this case exemplifies how the public can help police solve crimes.
"It ties in very well that it wasn't a person but also under the Criminal Code of Canada, there's a number of offences that can come into a play if somebody does injure or abuse an animal, as it should be," says Betteridge.
