A blow to the fundraising efforts at historic Assumption Church in west Windsor.
Philanthropist Al Quesnel had pledged $5-million if the campaign was able to raise the matching amount.
He has advised the fundraisers that the money has now been redirected to other projects.
It comes as a small, but important, donation has been made to the restoration project.
For the first time a donation has been made by by another church in the city, All Saints Anglican Church in the downtown.
The church has bought one of the copper shingles being placed on the roof for $250 and has written All Saints on the back side.
All Saints priest Father Robert Clifford says the hope is the message is heard at other faith communities.
"We felt it was something we could do, a small gesture we could make and would certainly encourage other communities of faith and people who are interested in historical preservation and in the Christian mission to support Assumption."
Assumption Church pastor Father Maurice Restivo is grateful for the donation.
"It is really the birth of Christianity in this area and I think the church building is iconic seen from the bridge. But it's also kind of a symbol in Windsor and to keep it alive makes a statement that Christianity is alive and well in Windsor."
Assumption Restoration Fundraising Chair Paul Mullins says the donation makes it clear this is not only about the Catholic Church.
"The non-Catholic, the non-Protestant, the non-Muslim, the non-Jew, the non-believer. This is part of their community. And it's important to the culture of the city and of the county and an important part of the history of the country."
