The Korean War Veterans Association of Windsor is searching for family members of five local Korean War veterans who were killed in action.
The association paid to have seven trees planted along the Highway of Heroes in honour of the veterans.
The next-of-kin of two veterans have been located and the association is hoping to locate the next-of-kin of the remaining five in order to present them with cards and certificates in memory of their loved ones.
President of the Korean War Veterans Association of Windsor, Pete Remdenok, 'believes' the family members are still living in the Windsor area. "I don't have really any leads on any of the family members at all," he says. "I did at one time have some of them but since then they have passed away."
Remdenok says the veterans should not be forgotten. "I think the families would really appreciate having this. Many people feel that the efforts that their family members put out losing their lives, have been forgotten by so many people. We don't want them to be forgotten, that's why we have planted the trees on the Highway of Heroes, we want to remember them, we have a monument that we built."
416 Canadians died in the Korean war from 1950 to 1953, seven of them were from Windsor. A monument was built at Dieppe Park in Windsor to honour the veterans.
The association is searching for the next-of-kin of the following veterans: Joseph Tellier, Clifford Donald Weir, Robert Frederick Thomas Girard, Earl Alva McIntyre and Robert James Jones.
Anyone who knows the families members of the veterans should contact the Korean War Veterans Association of Windsor at 519-945-0909 or click here to email Pete Remdenok.
