A Vatican diplomat is the subject of a Canada-wide warrant issued by Windsor police on child pornography charges.
The force's Internet Child Exploitation Unit launched an investigation earlier this year after receiving information from the R-C-M-P.
The probe led to a search warrant of an Internet provider for offences that occurred in late December 2016.
Police say child porn was uploaded from a computer at a church in Windsor.
Sgt. Steve Betteridge says the initial information came from the RCMP's National Child Exploitation Coordination Centre.
"We started an investigation, and the investigation is that there was an allegation that someone in the city of Windsor had uploaded child pornography using a social networking website," says Betteridge. "The alleged offence occurred in Windsor back in 2016 between December 24 and 27. Through the investigation it was believed the offences occurred while the suspect was visiting a place of worship."
50-year-old Monsignor Carlo Capella is wanted for charges of accessing, distributing and possessing child pornography.
The Diocese of London confirms it assisted Windsor police in its investigation but is making no further comment at this time.
Meantime, the Washington Post reports Capella has been recalled to the Vatican because US investigators suspect him of crimes involving child porn.
The newspaper says the State Department asked the Vatican to waive Capella's immunity so he could be prosecuted in the U-S but it refused.
