The University of Windsor has received $4.3-million in funding to help develop the next generation of electric vehicles.
Six researchers will be led by the Faculty of Engineering's Narayan Kar and will work in collaboration with the Canadian auto industry.
Kar says the goal of the project will be to develop a lighter and more efficient engine that will last longer.
"This is an opportunity to enhance knowledge and transfer that knowledge into a product that could be used in a future electric car," he says. "They can have an electric motor manufacturing facility that will create jobs. That's among many benefits that this project will have."
The educational aspect is a huge factor for Kar.
"It will also train a large number of the students and post-doctoral fellows," he added.
The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada contributed $1.9-million of the funding.
D&V Electronics, Ford Motor Company of Canada and Nemak provided the remaining $2.4-million for the project.
Kar says it took more than a year for the university to assemble and submit the proposal for the grant.
