A University of Windsor professor is taking part in a conference dealing with marijuana in the workplace.
The Conference Board of Canada held the meeting February 14 and 15 to bring together industry leaders to discuss how legalizing recreational use of marijuana will impact employers across the country.
Law Professor Bill Bogart is a speaker at the conference in Toronto to discuss how Canada reached this point in legalizing the drug.
Speaking on the Afternoon News, he says the path has already been paved for some time.
"Medical marijuana has been legal in this country for 15 years, for those who qualify, so employers have had to be dealing with marijuana in the workplace at least in terms of medical marijuana," he says.
Bogart says the conference is designed to provide some solutions for employers, employees and unions.
"A fair chunk of the population has been using cannabis for some time," he says. "Employers have had to face the issue of what do you do with an employee who has been using an illegal substance but many of the issues are the same."
Employers will have to adjust some of their regulations, Bogart added.
"Those various policies will have to be modified to take account of the fact that cannabis is going to be a legalized and regulated substance, much like alcohol is," he says.
Bogart believes legalizing and regulating marijuana is good for society because criminalizing it imposed a lot of costs on society.
