The Windsor Spitfires notched their second win in a row with a 2-0 shutout win over the Niagara Ice Dogs Sunday at the WFCU Centre.
It was a defensive battle over the first two frames but Windsor finally hit the board with Cutis Douglas' 17th goal of the season mid-way through the third period.
"[Stephen] Dhillon's a really good goalie, me and him were battling all game," says Douglas. "I think I had six or seven shots on him and to be honest I think that was one of my worst shots. I was just finally able to put one past him."
Mathew MacDougall tucked a powerplay goal into an empty net to secure the win with less than two-minutes left in the game.
Windsor goalie Michael DiPietro stopped all 24 shots he faced on his way to his fifth shutout of the season and first star of the game honours.
"Doesn't matter if I let in none or five goals as long as we win the game, that's been our focus," DiPietro says. "Rebounding after Thursday night's loss and getting four points the rest of the weekend is really key for a young group to instill some swagger back in our room and realize we're doing a lot of good things. We just weren't getting the bounces."
Windsor had been winless in seven games but back to back wins over the weekend have pulled them out of their funk.
Head Coach Trevor Letowski says it was a big win over a tough team.
"Dougie [Douglas] scored the big goal that made the difference, that wasn't easy. Obviously Mikey [DiPietro] too is a difference maker with a few highlight reel saves," Letowski says. "At the end of the day we limited a high-octane team like that to 24-shots, we feel good about the way we played."
Dhillon was named third star of the game after stopping 22 of 24 shots in a losing effort for Niagara.
The Spitfires are back in action against the Barrie Colts at the WFCU on Thursday — game time is set for 7:05pm.
