Windsor fell short in a tough match up against the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds Thursday at the WFCU Centre.
The Spitfires faced the ninth ranked team in the nation without their captain Luke Boca. He served a two game suspension for his post-game fight with a Barrie player and was a game time decision.
Not much was settled until Morgan Frost put the Soo up 1-0 on a long shot from the point past Windsor's Michael DiPietro in the second to close the period. The third period would see the Greyhounds break out with two un-answered goals by Keeghan Howdeshell, one into an empty net, to make it 3-0.
Windsor made it interesting with goals from Will Culle and Tyler Angle, but it wouldn't be enough as the Soo cruised to a 3-2 victory over the Spitfires at the WFCU Centre Thursday night.
Spitfires Defenseman Nathan Staios says the team just has to keep working.
"It's worked in the past and we have to start applying it more in terms of playing fast, making plays down low, cycling and changing sides," he says. "We just have to trust our process and hopefully the wins will start coming in the end."
Tyler Angle tells AM800 News a few bounces are all the Spitfires need.
"On me too, the goalie made a couple good saves. We just have to get grittier and get down their lower, get in front of the net and shoot and hopefully we'll start getting them when it's closer in to the crease," says Staios.
DiPietro stopped 19-21 shots, 21, Matthew Villalta stopped 27-29 shots he faced in the win, the Spitfires outshot the Soo 29-22. The Spitfires fall to 5-7-0-1 and the night ranked Greyhounds improve to 9-3-2-0.
Head Coach Trevor Letowski says the boys should hold their heads high, because they're doing their jobs out there.
"For me, I look at the big picture. We executed our game plan very well against one of the best teams in the country and probably deserved a better fate, it gets a little repetitive," says Letowski.
Windsor heads into Barrie's Molson Centre to take on the Colts Saturday night - puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
