A Windsor man who injured a Windsor police dog during an arrest has been sentenced to jail.
Alexander Gusba, 29, will another 12 months and 9 days behind bars after pleading guilty to injuring a dog and attempted robbery.
He has been in custody since his arrest.
On May 19, 2018, police were called to Ojibway Parkway for a man walking in the middle of the road, yelling and kicking at vehicles.
The man matched the description of a suspect wanted in an attempted robbery at the Tim Horton's nearby.
When officers arrived, Gusba refused to comply with orders and instead pulled out a knife, waving it around.
Police dog Hasko was deployed and bit Gusba's arm. Gusba then slashed the dog's head.
Court heard Gusba suffers from a mental illness and was suffering an schizophrenic episode.
Police dog Hasko suffered a cut to his head, was bandaged and discharged from a veterinarian hospital.
Police had to use a taser to subdue Gusba and arrest him.
In handing down his sentence, Justice Lloyd Dean told Gusba that he 'presents a real challenge to the courts' because of his mental illness.
"It is fortunate the police officers didn't use a lethal weapon to make it worse than what it was," Justice Dean said.
Gusba told the court that he's been assaulted three times since he's been in custody and the last five months have been rough.
