Windsor-Essex still has work to do when it comes to bringing more family doctors to the area.
The report released Thursday from the Canadian Institute of Health Information says over the last five years, the number of doctors in Canada has increased at a rate more than double that of the population growth.
Since 2014, the number of doctors in Canada increased by more than 12 per cent to almost 90,000 while the population expanded by almost five per cent.
Vicki Scott is the program lead for physician information at CIHI.
Scott told AM800's The Lynn Martin Show that in the Erie-St.Clair region there are 616 family doctors, which is around 93 family doctors per 100,000 people. She says that's lower than the provincial average which is 116 per 100,000. The national average is 122 per 100,000 people.
The report also reveals a changing demographic trend among the physician population, citing more female doctors in Canada than ever before.
Scott says the Erie-St.Clair region is just under the national average.
"Right now its about 36 per cent female family doctors in your region. In Canada, its overall around 39 per cent."
Statistics Canada figures from 2016 show 15.8 per cent of Canadians over 12 years old, or about 4.8 million people, didn't have a regular family doctor.
