There are two confirmed deaths related to the West Nile Virus in Windsor-Essex.
The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has received two separate reports within the last week that the deaths are attributed to the virus.
Acting Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed says two seniors died.
"Both these cases are elderly individuals within our community and we were notified of those cases and we are still investigating and collecting more information from the family and friends," he says.
The health unit points out the virus continues to be a risk until the area experiences temperatures below freezing.
Most people with the virus never develop any symptoms, but 25% will get a fever.
So far this year, there have been 11 confirmed cases of West Nile Virus in humans. Last year, there were four cases.
Dr.Ahmed says the weather has contributed to more mosquitos in the area.
"Compared to last year, we have more rain this year and the temperatures are in the high 20s and sometimes in the 30s."
Residents are asked to eliminate any standing water around their home and use insect repellent that contains DEET.
The last time there was a death related to the virus in this area was in 2012.
