The 2017 budget is being called a challenging process

Taxes are going up in Essex.

Town council approved the 2017 budget in principle earlier this week which calls for a 2.36%.

Deputy Mayor Richard Meloche called the process challenging. "We got a lot of roads projects that are going to be coming up and just trying to keep up with ensuring we have safe roads."

"The town is also dealing with an increase electrical, gas and insurance costs," says Meloche. "Just keeping up with all the increases and all these necessities that you have as far as expenses go to run a municipality, same as households.  I think we're doing pretty good at trying to keep close to the rate of inflation."
