Windsor police are holding the scene for an undisclosed investigation

A fire that displaced five people and killed a pet bird is being investigated by Windsor police.

Firefighters were called to the 3100-block of Donnelly St. just after midnight Sunday.

Crews arrived to find heavy fire and smoke coming from the basement.

It took about an hour to get the blaze under control which caused an estimated $80,000 in damage.

Two dogs were rescued while the fire claimed the life of a parrot.

Windsor Fire and Rescues Service's John Lee says the blaze started in the basement but the cause is listed as undetermined.

The property is taped off and a Windsor Police Service cruiser remains on scene as of 12pm.

Lee says Windsor fire's investigation is complete, but police are pursuing other leads.

Police will only say it's an active investigation at this point.
