Windsor police have determined a bomb threat that cleared Devonshire Mall is bogus.
The mall was evacuated around 7:30pm Thursday evening.
Police say the threat made was not genuine and there was no bomb found. The canine unit was brought in and sniffed a car thought to potentially be involved, but found nothing.
Police say the threat was made over the phone to a store in the mall and the voice was disguised with some kind of modulator. Police say it was a general threat and no one specifically was targeted.
Erin Mammarella was at the mall with her husband watching the movie 'Patriots Day' — a movie about the Boston Marathon bombings in 2013.
"It was just shortly after the bombing went off in the movie, which was a little bit creepy. So, the bombing went off [in the movie] and the movie froze. We were all looking around to see what happened. Shortly after that an usher appeared before the audience and asked us to evacuate out the back door," says Mammarella.
She says when the usher asked them to leave, she thought it was all a bit odd.
"I immediately felt like, 'I just want to get out of here and go home,'" says Mammarella. "I just had an intuition that something wasn't right."
Mammarella says people didn't rush the doors and felt people were fairly relaxed in being ushered out of the mall.
"People seem to want to get out. They were saying, 'Move, move, move along. Walk out quickly,'" says Mammarella. "You know when you have a crowd people sort of gather around the door to start talking so people were saying, 'Move along. Let the rest out.'"
No word yet from mall management as to how the decision to clear the mall was arrived at and if movie-goers are in line to be reimbursed in any way.
