The Ontario PC has called a leadership convention to be held sometime before March 31.
Windsor West PC candidate Adam Ibrahim says 28-candidates had signed a petition shortly after MPP Vic Fedeli was voted interim leader by the PC caucus Friday.
The move for a leader selected by the more than 200,000 members of the party has been confirmed by Windsor-Tecumseh PC President Scott Duquette.
"I've been told before March 31, likely March 24, but I'm waiting on those dates," he says. "The format for voting is going to be confirmed as well."
Ibrahim tells AM800 News it's not an attack of Fedeli as a leader, it's about due process.
"He won today, and I have no problem with that, I think it's great," he says. "I just feel the need to go through the proper channels, the proper democratic channels, and allow the grass-roots members to have a voice at the table."
Ibrahim says the 61-year-old MPP will make a great interim leader.
"I'm so happy for him, he's been a long time MPP, he's a very well respected member in the caucus, he's a very well respected member of his community," says Ibrahim. "I just think we need to go ahead and listen to the grass-roots members of the party."
Fedeli is taking over as interim leader of the Ontario PC after Patrick Brown was pushed out following sexual misconduct allegations — he was picked by the PC caucus Friday morning.
Ibrahim's confident there would be plenty of time for a new leader to prepare for the upcoming election.
