The Ottawa Senators have traded Mike Hoffman to San Jose but he won't be staying there.
Hoffman was sent to San Jose along with Cody Donaghy and Ottawa’s fifth-round pick in 2020.
Going to Ottawa is forward Mikkel Boedker, defenceman Julius Bergman and a sixth-round choice in the 2020.
But hours later, the Sharks sent Hoffman and a 2018 seventh round pick from San Jose in exchange for Florida's 2019 second round pick, 2018 fourth round pick and 2018 5th round pick.
In a release from the Senators, the team stated “today’s trade showcases our determination to strengthen the future of the team by improving chemistry, leadership and character in the locker room and on the ice. We are confident it is a step in the right direction for the long-term success of this organization,” said Senators general manager Pierre Dorion.
Hoffman has been under fire in Ottawa after his fiancee, Monika Caryk, was accused of cyberbullying Melinda Karlsson, the wife of Senators captain Erik Karlsson.
In an application for a peace bond filed May 4 in an Ottawa court, Melinda Karlsson alleged that Caryk posted hundreds of derogatory online messages aimed at her and her husband.
The Karlssons were subjected to trolling posts on Erik's Instagram account after their first child was stillborn in March.
The couple have denied the allegations which have not been proven in court.
