Sources say the accused allegedly threatened to use an AK47 on Prime Minister Trudeau

A Leamington man has been charged with uttering threats against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau ahead of the prime minister's visit to Leamington this weekend.

Royce VanEvery, 60, was arraigned in court Friday on the charge and has been remanded in custody until next week.

His lawyer John Sitter tells AM800 news, it started after VanEvery attended Windsor-Tecumseh MPP Percy Hatfield's office on Thursday, allegedly causing a disturbance and complaining about an issue.

The issue was a federal issue, so the accused contacted the PM's office over speaker phone.

A source tells AM800 News, the accused allegedly 'threatened to use an AK 47 on the prime minister and he referenced the shootings in Ottawa on Parliament Hill.'

"I don't think there is any fear here," says Sitter.  "I think it might be overblown quite honestly, the crown's position, they are holding him for the long weekend."

Sitter says his client is a former veteran and has mental health issues.

"I don't think he knew how serious this was,  what he had done has gotten him into a great deal of trouble."

Sitter was hoping to have his client released from custody but with Trudeau's visit this Sunday, a bail hearing was set for Tuesday.
