Layoff notices are going out at the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board.
16 have been issued for the 2019-2020 school year.
Board spokesperson Stephen Fields says this is not uncommon at this time of year.
"This is actually a fairly normal part of our staffing process as we deal with fluctuating enrollment numbers throughout the school system," says Fields. "So those teachers who receive layoff notices have the opportunity to select any vacant position that is still available after the last posting and we expect that there's going to be more positions posted on Monday."
Fields says in the last two years, they've issued 26 layoff notices and everyone still had a job in the new school year.
"And by September all of our teachers were working and there was nobody on layoff," notes Fields. "And we've actually issued fewer layoff notice this year so we're pretty confident that all of our elementary teachers are going to be working come September and at this point we're doing everything we can to try and minimize the impact that these layoffs are going to have on our staff."
Fields tells AM800 News this happens each year as they go through their numbers.
"We're confident there's going to be a number of new positions that are going to be posted as a result of some of the surplus notices that went out. We feel pretty good about it," says Fields. "We understand that it's stressful for the people in our system and we do try to minimize that stress as much as we can but we're optimistic and confident that we should have all of our elementary teachers back working in September."
