The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit (WECHU) is reporting 88 new cases of COVID-19 in the region, 87 of which are workers in the agri-farm sector.
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed says it's the second-highest number of cases reported in one day. The highest was June 28 with 98 new cases, 96 of those were in the agri-farm sector.
Dr. Ahmed says the local health unit will be receiving some assistance from the Middlesex-London Health Unit with Associate Medical Officer of Health Dr. Alex Summers along with two colleagues who will be in the region for a few weeks to assist with the agri-farm outbreak.
"Our team of nurse practitioners, public health nurse, public health inspectors will be on site to do a health assessment on all these workers who have tested positive and interview them for case and contact management," says Dr. Ahmed. "Based on the interview and health assessment we will have a better understanding of these cases, their current health status and any other issues."
Dr. Ahmed says the health unit is still trying to contain the movement of workers from one farm to another.
"If a facility is currently under an outbreak, anyone who is coming in or going out to the facility, I think it's important for them to disclose that and to share that information with the rest of the group," says Dr. Ahmed.
He says the call has gone out to another health units to assist with the agri-farm outbreak.
"We have had at least 10 more staff that we know from different health units will be supporting us and the ministry is also providing us with more support," says Dr. Ahmed, "So hopefully a combination of all of that would help us manage in the short term."
Premier Doug Ford spoke on the issue Monday as well stating 250 inspections have taken place on farms with 70 orders issued.
Ford says on one farm, with 475 workers, 175 people tested positive adding the government is doing everything in its power to resolve these cases.
There are now a total of 1,580 cases in Windsor-Essex, 68 deaths are reported and 864 cases are resolved.
Last Thursday parts of Windsor-Essex, with the exception of Leamington and Kingsville, moved to stage two of the province's recovery plan.
Leamington and Kingsville remain in stage one.
