The Windsor Essex County Health Unit (WECHU) is reporting an additional three deaths due to COVID-19, for a total of 54. There are also 18 new positive cases for a total of 641.
40 of the 54 deaths have been residents of long-term care or retirement homes and the health unit is now dealing with outbreaks at eight long-term care or retirement homes.
"A female in her 90s, a female in her 80s and a male in his 60s all passed away yesterday. All three of these individuals were residents of long-term care homes," says Medical Officer of Health Dr. Ahmed.
A new number being reported Monday is that 16 per cent of the cases are now in people between the ages of 20 and 29.
Dr. Ahmed says the majority of those cases are in healthcare workers but it's important for everyone in that age group to continue to take precautions.
"When you are protecting yourself from COVID-19 you are not protecting yourself alone, you are also protecting your family and the people who are around you," he says. "So please take your time to protect yourself from COVID-19 by taking all the precautions including physical distancing, hand washing and maintaining good respiratory etiquette."
With Transit Windsor service resuming and some stores re-opening, Dr. Ahmed says this is a very crucial time.
"All the good work that everyone has done including our community members, I think we have put in a lot of effort, it,s not easy to follow all those guidelines but we have made it through and I would like to see us cross the finish line with more success rather than going back to where we started from."
8,175 tests have been done with 1,379 results still pending.
17 people are in the hospital with three of those people in the ICU.
