There has been a jump in the number of COVID-19 cases in Windsor-Essex.
The local health unit is reporting 25 new cases for a total of of 2,449 cases. 21 of the cases are workers in the agri-farm sector, three are residents of a retirement home and one is under investigation.
According to Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed, the owner of the farm where the infected workers are, is working with the health unit.
"When we are talking about these farms obviously these farms have their plans and the plan is only good when it's implemented and followed by everyone including the workers, the employers, the administrators and everyone else," says Dr. Ahmed.
He says most of the transmission in the agri-farm sector is happening in bunkhouses and their congregate living settings.
"If you have household contacts, doesn't matter what you do, they're automatically would be high risk contacts and the likelihood of them contracting COVID would be significantly high," says Dr. Ahmed.
"When we are dealing with the farms, it's a little bit more complicated," he adds. "Most of the transmission is happening at their bunkhouses, at their congregate living settings whether than an actual workplace and from an employer prospective obviously the employer is doing everything at the work place."
Outbreaks are now reported at two long-term care or retirement homes, Shoreview at Riverside in Windsor where four staff members are infected and New Beginnings in Leamington where four residents and one staff member is infected.
There are also outbreaks at four workplaces, three in the agriculture sector in Kingsville and Leamington and one in the manufacturing sector in Windsor.
