WINDSOR — The local medical officer of health is encouraging Mother's Day this weekend, to be a virtual visit.
During the daily briefing Friday morning, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit reported one additional death in the region.
A woman in her 100's passed away, bringing the total number of deaths to 58.
There were also 11 new cases, bringing the total number of positive cases to 685 in Windsor-Essex.
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed says with Mother's Day this weekend, people should still try and keep their physical distance from their mothers.
He says sons and daughters should Facetime or call their mothers, but try to stay away from them, as the threat of COVID-19 still lingers.
"I would encourage people to try to make that virtual visit and if it is not possible, people can try to take steps to ensure they are not violating that physical distancing piece," he says. "You have to be mindful, our mothers, grandparents, they are all vulnerable."
Dr. Ahmed reminds people, even if they don't have symptoms, they can still carry the virus and bring it to their mother.
"Anything bad that we can bring to them, it may not be a good thing," he adds. "As much as it may be difficult and challenging to be with your mother or grandmothers, you have to take precautions."
There are currently 11 outbreaks at area long term care homes and retirement homes.
More than 250 local cases have been resolved.
10,012 people have been tested, which accounts for 2.5 per cent of the population, in Windsor-Essex.
1,420 test results are still pending.
