A University of Windsor professor is part of a national study looking into the long-term outcomes of Syrian refugees.
Psychology professor Dr. Ben Kuo will be leading the Windsor portion of the study which will interview 135 local Syrian refugees annually to see how they are settling in.
The project across the country received $1.3-million from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
Dr. Kuo says the study will look at how they are adapting to Canadian life.
"Their ability to use services in Canadian society, educational, employment, public transit, cultural resources and that sort of thing," says Dr Kuo.
He says the study will also track their physical health in terms of pain difficulties and mental health with depression, anxiety or post traumatic stress disorder.
Syrian refugees began arriving in Canada a year ago.
Dr. Kuo says this is also a learning exercise for Canada in trying to reduce any barriers the refugees are facing.
