Not much of a shocker for the Citizen's Environment Alliance.
Researcher Derek Coronado says the US pullout from the Paris Accord announced by President Donald Trump was expected.
Coronado says the move was clearly telegraphed by Trump.
"Given the Republican platform in the last campaign as well as Donald Trump's comments recently on climate change it was expected this would happen," says Coronado.
He says it has effectively downloaded the cost to other governments.
"A lot of the slack from the federal government in the US pulling out will be picked up by sub-national governments in the US -- states, cities," says Coronado. "I think you're starting to see that now as more and more pledges are brought forward by cities in the US to uphold the commitment in the Paris Agreement."
He says the move creates an opening for Canadian entrepreneurs.
"This signals that the US in terms of support for clean-tech development from the federal government is not going to be there. That means other companies from outside the US can step up and step into markets American companies were going to go into prior to the US pulling out," says Coronado.
He says the negative impact on water quality in the Great Lakes is a big concern.
