One of Canada's leading auto analysts has deep concerns about what President Elect Donald Trump's policies could do to the auto sector.
Dennis Desrosiers says Trump's "make America great again" theme could end up devastating the auto industry in the US as well as Canada and Mexico.
Desrosiers admits he's not hearing of companies making any moves yet, until they know what the policies will be.
He says disentangling the auto industry would be complicated and costly: "the auto sector is stunningly complex, with thousands of components that cross the border 5,6,7 times in order to make a vehicle within Canada, the US and or Mexico. They're not only tariff free, they're paperwork free. A lot of people forget that"
Desrosiers says the policies he's talked about imposing - such as dismantling NAFTA or imposing a 35% tariff - are guaranteed to be disruptive on both sides of the border and will kill jobs.

He says the impact of the expected Trump policies would not be evenly distributed because the parts sector would be hammered more than assembly plants.
Desrosiers says the parts sector in Canada represents much more employment with up to 80,000 workers compared to 40-50,000 in the assembly sector.
