The Optimist Club of South Windsor is looking to get the Halloween spirit going a little early.
They're hosting a Trick or Trunk event at Optimist Memorial Park, in the parking lot near the baseball diamonds, this afternoon beginning at 2:30 p.m. and running until 5 p.m.
Club president Elton Robinson says they've got a lot planned.
"There's going to be a lot going on. We've got about 30 plus cars that are going to decorated and handing out candy. We're also going to have our soap boxes, because we're known for the soap box derby, and we're going to have some there so kids can take pictures in our soap boxes," he said.
Robinson says they'll be supplying candy to every vehicle entered to participate, and they're also asking anyone planning on stopping by to bring along some non-perishable food items that will be donated to a local food bank.
He says they want to get the word out that they're planning on getting more family events going, and he's already feeling some buzz.
"Even putting the fire department on here, some people have sent me some stuff from the mom's groups saying 'Firefighters? We're going to be there'. Hah, so it's going to be awesome and as long as there's lots of children there that's what we're all about. It's going to be a great day."
After two years of not being able to put on events for families in the community, Robinson says it's special for organizers to be back.
"The hard work we do behind the scenes is what it's all about," he continued. "When you see that smile on a kids face, it just gives you more energy to want to raise more awareness about the stuff we do just to get more and more love out in our community."
Robinson says thanks to one of his friend's at the fire department they'll have a fire truck on site that will be open for people to go into, and the fire officials will be handing out candy and showing how the equipment works during the event as well.
