The mother of a Windsor girl who suffered severe burns in a house fire has testified in the trial of the Windsor man accused of starting the fire.
44-year-old Kenneth Kormendy pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and arson in the fire on Balfour Boulevard in October 2015.
Sheri Rueda testified she met Kormendy online in August 2015 and he moved in with her the following month.
But the relationship quickly deteriorated and she wanted Kormendy to move out because she felt he was too controlling and clingy.
On October 24, 2015, she said she was sleeping with her daughter 7-year old Isabel when Kormendy walked in smelling like gasoline.
During cross-examination, Rueda admitted Kormendy told her he smelled like gasoline because he had lit a fire in the backyard.
She testified "he poured gasoline on the bed" and all over the room.
She led him out of the room and closed the door. She then heard a 'swoosh and the fire came right under the door.'
She escaped through the window with Isabel but the girl suffered severe burns to his face, torso, legs, arms, feet and hands.
She testified her daughter was all black and yelling that she was going to die.
Rueda began to cry as photos of her daughter suffering from burns were shown in court.
