Transport Canada has responded to accusations that it's to blame for a delay in the launch of the new ferry service to Pelee Island.
As AM800 News reported on Thursday, Chatham-Kent-Leamington MPP Rick Nicholls blamed regulatory and safety approvals with Transport Canada taking longer than anticipated.
The $40-million Pelee Islander II ferry service was suppose to set sail in September, but it remains docked.
Transport Canada says 'the Government of Canada will continue to work diligently to ensure the safety of passengers and crew on vessels operating in Canadian waters.'
It notes Transport Canada officials worked with ferry operator, Owen Sound Transportation Company, to determine crew requirements under the Canada Shipping Act — that document was issued by the department on November 9, 2018.
As well, a vessel inspection certificate is required by a 'recognized organization.'
The 'recognized organization' is responsible for issuing the vessel inspection certificate — not Transport Canada.
