The Town of Essex is seeking to purchase the former Harrow District High School.
The site is being put up for sale by the Greater Essex County District School Board.
Council has decided they will be putting forward a letter to the school board expressing their interest in purchasing the building.
Essex Deputy Mayor Richard Meloche says Harrow High has become an integral part of the area.
If allowed to purchase the school, he says it would become a great asset to the community.
"The Town of Essex knows that it is an intricate part of our community," says Meloche. "The build is in good structural condition, so that is something to our benefit if we were to purchase."
He says negotiating with the board could take a long time.
"Yes we want to put our hat into the ring," says Meloche. "We want to be one of the people who are allowed purchase if we can. They are going to put fair market value for us, come back to us and we will see at that point in time if we are allowed to do it."
Essex Mayor Ron McDermott says purchasing the school would be a community effort.
"Well, we are sending the letter and we got to get some people involved who were involved when we were trying to save the school in regards to a community hub," he says. "We have many business people out there who want to put money into this project."
Once council has formally submitted their letter, it will be up to the board to set the price of the building and begin negotiating with bidders.
