Jonathan Osorio scored in the fifth minute as Toronto downed the Ottawa Fury 1-nil on the road in the first leg.
Toronto claimed an important road goal in the opening match, and will host the second leg at BMO Field July 25th.
The Montreal Impact won the first leg of their Canadian Championship semifinal at home thanks to Alejandro Silva.
He scored the game's only goal in the 58th minute as Montreal beat the Vancouver Whitecaps 1-nil.
The Impact take their one-goal lead into the return leg of the two-game total goals series next Wednesday in Vancouver.
