The Tigers hit three home runs to back six shutout innings from Matthew Boyd in a 7-2 win over the White Sox in Detroit.
Nicholas Castellanos, Mikie Mahtook and Ronny Rodriguez all went deep for the Tigers, who built a 7-0 lead in the seventh inning.
Boyd scattered six hits and a walk for the win. James Shields surrendered all seven runs in less than seven frames to fall to 5-and-15 with the loss.
Jose Rondon hit a two-run homer in the eighth for Chicago, which had won six of its previous eight games.
The four-game series continues tonight as Michael Fulmer returns to the mound for Detroit against Chicago's Reynaldo Lopez.
Fulmer is making his first start since he was placed on the disabled list with a left oblique strain July 20th.
