The number 3 will never be worn again by a member of the Detroit Tigers.
The ball club retired the number made famous by Hall of Fame shortstop Alan Trammell Sunday
He was the Most Valuable Player in the 1984 World Series and was enshrined in Cooperstown earlier this year with teammate Jack Morris.
Trammell reflected on his 20-year career as a Tigers player before Sunday's game against the Chicago White Sox, thanking his former teammates and the fans for their support.
The team retired the number 47 for Morris previously this year, and several years ago retired the number 11 for manager Sparky Anderson, who guided the club to the 1984 title and the American League East championship in 1987.
As for the game after the ceremony, Jordan Zimmermann gave up four runs in the third inning and the Tigers went on to lose 7-2 to the White Sox at Comerica Park.
Victor Martinez doubled in a run and Ronny Rodriguez homered for Detroit, which lost three-of-four.
Five Tigers had two hits apiece.
